Hillsborough is an incorporated town in San Mateo County, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area. Hillsborough is one of the wealthiest places in America and has the highest income of places in America with populations of at least 10,000. It is located seventeen miles (27 km) south of San Francisco on the San Francisco Peninsula, between Interstate 280 and SR 82 (El Camino Real). The population was 10,825 at the 2000 census. The town is served by Hillsborough City School District. Hillsborough is home to some of the Bay Area's wealthiest people, and the landscape is dominated by large homes; the city enforces a 2,500-square-foot (230 m2) minimum house size and half-acre minimum lot size to preserve exclusivity. As a result, there are no apartments, condominiums or townhouses in the city limits; however, it is not unusual for the homes along the eastern edge of Hillsborough to face condominiums in neighboring Burlingame, with which it shares ZIP code 94010. In 2007, Coldwell Banker lists Hillsborough as the most expensive housing market in the United States, with a median home price of over $3.8 million.
Primarily a residential suburb of San Francisco, Hillsborough has many mansions within the town's borders dating from the early 20th century.
The Flintstone House - also known as the Dome/Bubble/Marshmallow/Gumby house, etc., is strategically located on a hillside above the Crystal Springs Reservoir south of San Francisco. The actual street address is on Berryessa Way, but the best view of this house is the one you'll see while traveling north on Interstate I-280 crossing the Doran Memorial Bridge. You've got maybe 15, 20 seconds to take a picture, so have your camera ready.
Designed by architect William Nicholson and built in 1976 using sprayed concrete over balloon-shaped forms, the house suffered from structural and drainage problems for years, and almost had to be torn down because of mold growth throughout the walls. Its demise would have delighted many neighbors in the conservative community of Hillsborough, who set up a local design review board after the house was first built, in hopes of preventing any more such oddities from invading their area. Fortunately, repairs were made around 1988 that saved the house and allowed its continued occupation. It still is a private residence, so enjoy the view from the highway.
For many years the house was a gleaming - perhaps even glaring - white, but recently it has been painted a deep orange-red color. Not so in-your-face obvious, but very attractive.
